As of Wednesday morning, nearly 17,000 residents were grappling with the consequences of the storm, enduring power outages that disrupted their daily lives. However, a glimmer of hope emerged as BC Hydro mounted a full-scale response to address the issue.

Thanks to the relentless efforts of BC Hydro crews working through the evening and into the night, the number of households without power has been significantly reduced. As of the latest update on Wednesday evening around 7 p.m., that number had dropped to just over 650.

A BC Hydro spokesperson shared insights on the ongoing efforts, stating, “Crews continue to make progress on repairs to restore power following last night’s windstorm. Unfortunately, due to the extensive damage in some of the hardest-hit areas, we do expect to have some customers out overnight.”

The Musgraves Landing area on Salt Spring Island, one of the regions hit hardest by the storm, bore the brunt of the impact, leaving approximately 51 customers without power overnight. To address this situation, BC Hydro dispatched crews to the area, with an estimated arrival time of around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 26th.

Beyond Salt Spring Island, the windstorm also affected customers in Duncan, Shawnigan Lake, and Lake Cowichan areas. BC Hydro remains committed to transparency and is actively sharing updates and estimated times for power restoration on their website.

As Vancouver Island residents navigate the challenges brought about by this violent windstorm, the tireless efforts of BC Hydro crews are a testament to their commitment to restoring power and normalcy to the region. The resilient spirit of the community, coupled with the dedication of these response teams, will undoubtedly pave the way for a swift recovery.
